INFORMATION FOR THE MAY 26 TEACHERS WORKSHOP AT MIT

  • Date: May 26, 2007
  • Location: MIT Stata Center (Building 32), 32 Vassar Street <see map below>
  • Room: TBD (ground floor, follow the signs)

There is no charge to attend. There's lots of room, so bring other members of your team if you like.

Teach the Teachers 2007 Workshops

We are planning three Teachers Workshops in 2007, one in North America, one in China, and one in Europe.

New instructors are required to attend one of the workshops. Experienced instructors -- ie. those that have participated in iGEM in previous years -- are also encouraged to attend. The workshop will describe the philosophical foundations of the iGEM program, describe the requirements and expectations for participation in 2007, and introduce the resources available to the participating teams. The workshop also provides an opportunity to meet the iGEM organizers, tour the laboratory operations that support the competition, socialize with other iGEM team leaders, and gather information and materials for a successful year.

Your Role in the Teachers Workshop

During the workshop, you will be expected to use your laptop to edit parts, enter information on the wiki and perform other modern internet tasks. You will also be expected to give a 10 minute presentation of your iGEM team please plan to cover the following topics and more if you wish:

  • What are your expectations and hopes for iGEM 2007?
  • What has happened at your school to get ready for iGEM 2007?
  • Please describe the team - the students, the instructors, and the facilitys available.
  • How are you supporting your team?

Directions to MIT from Logan Airport

By taxi - Taxi fare from the airport is about $20-$25. During non-rush hour, the taxi ride will take about 15 minutes. During rush hour, the ride could take 30 minutes.

By subway - From any terminal at Logan airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway (inbound toward Alewife) and exit Kendall/MIT to go to the Stata Center. If heading to the Hotel at MIT, continue on one more station to Central. Under normal conditions the ride will take about one-half hour and the fare is $1.25. Click [http://www.mbta.com/traveling_t/schedules_subway.asp here] for maps and information about the Boston subway system.

By car - Leaving the airport, follow the signs to the Sumner Tunnel. Enter the tunnel and stay in the right lane. At the end of the tunnel, continue to stay in the right lane, start down an incline and bear to the right immediately at the sign for Storrow Drive. Take Exit 26 for Cambridge/Somerville. Follow the signs for Back Bay/Cambridge (do not take the exit for Cambridge/Somerville). Stay in the right lane and follow the signs for Storrow Drive Westbound. After you pass under the pedestrian walkbridges, change to the left lane and take the exit for 2A North. Turn right and cross the Harvard Bridge (Massachusetts Avenue). MIT's main entrance is 77 Massachusetts Avenue, and it will be on the right at the second set of traffic lights.

Accommodations

  • The [http://www.hotelatmit.com Hotel@MIT] (20 Sidney St, Cambridge,(617) 577-0200) is excellent and close to campus (see map below).
  • Alternatively, the Boston Marriott Cambridge (2 Cambridge Ctr, Cambridge, (617) 494-6600) is a good choice.
  • Or check out a comprehensive list of temporary housing [http://web.mit.edu/housing/och/temporary_housing.html here].
