Hello iGEMers. My name is Karmella Haynes. To read more about me, visit [http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/kahaynes/kahaynes.html my webpage at the Davidson College website].
Hello Synthetic Biology
I first became involved in Synthetic Biology through Davidson's 2006 iGEM project. I came to Davidson with extensive training in "classical" biology research (Molecular Genetics). After learning more about iGEM, I was blown away by the elegance of the standardized system for assembling biological "parts." I instantly fell in love with the field of Synthetic Biology. I plan to continue research in this exploratory cutting-edge field. Perhaps I've been corrupted, having departed "classical" deconstructive biology for the engineer's constructive or "bottom-up" approach. Well, I am the daughter of an electrical engineer. Perhaps engineering is in my genes.
Current Work
Currently I am working on developing Davidson College's "E.HOP" living computer project to "completion" (a publishable unit). The Flash Animation below summarizes how we hope the living computer will work.
iGEM Teach The Teachers Workshop, China: June 16-17, 2007
Special thanks to my mentor A. Malcolm Campbell, Patrick Cai (VA Tech), Dean Yuan (Tianjin Univ.), Tom Knight (MIT) and Randy Rettberg (MIT) for allowing me the opportunity to to help facilitate the China iGEM TTT Workshop.
Synthetic Biology 3.0: June 23-26, 2007
